Online blackjack in 2026: rules, strategy and live tables in the UK
Blackjack rules from the first deal to the payout, the table rules that change your odds, basic strategy and how live blackjack works at GB casinos.

Online blackjack is the card game known as 21, played against the dealer either in software or at a live-streamed table, and in Great Britain it is offered by casinos holding a Gambling Commission remote casino licence. Played with basic strategy on good rules, blackjack has one of the lowest house edges in the casino, but small rule changes, especially a 6 to 5 payout on blackjack, can multiply that edge.
Below are the rules, the table conditions to check, a short basic-strategy guide and how live and multi-player blackjack games work at GB casinos.

Blackjack rules in brief
You and the dealer each get two cards; one dealer card is face up. Cards 2-10 count at face value, picture cards count 10 and an ace counts 1 or 11. The aim is to finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. An ace plus a ten-value card on the first two cards is a blackjack and normally pays 3 to 2. Other wins pay 1 to 1, and a tie (a "push") returns your stake.
Your options on each hand:
- Hit - take another card.
- Stand - keep your total.
- Double down - double the stake and take exactly one more card.
- Split - turn a pair into two hands with a second stake.
- Insurance - a side bet offered when the dealer shows an ace; it pays 2 to 1 if the dealer has blackjack and is generally a poor bet.
The dealer has no choices: they draw to 16 and stand on 17, with the table rule saying whether they stand or hit on a "soft" 17 that includes an ace counted as 11.
Table rules that change your odds
| Rule | Better for you | Worse for you |
|---|---|---|
| Blackjack payout | 3 to 2 | 6 to 5 (a large increase in the house edge) |
| Dealer on soft 17 | Stands | Hits |
| Doubling | Any two cards, and after splitting | Only on 9, 10 or 11 |
| Decks | Fewer | More (most online games use six or eight) |
| Surrender | Offered | Not offered |
These rules are printed in each game's help screen and often on the felt itself. Reading them takes a minute and tells you more about the game's value than its graphics or branding.
Basic strategy: the short version
Basic strategy is the mathematically best decision for every combination of your hand and the dealer's up-card. It does not guarantee anything, but on standard rules it brings the house edge well under 1%. A few core rules cover most hands:
- Always stand on hard 17 or more; always hit hard 8 or less.
- With hard 12-16, stand if the dealer shows 2-6 and hit if they show 7 or higher (except hit 12 against 2 or 3).
- Double 11 against any dealer card except an ace on many tables, and double 10 against 2-9.
- Always split aces and eights; never split tens or fives.
- Decline insurance.
Full strategy charts vary slightly with the rules, so use one that matches the table. Card counting has no practical use online: software games shuffle every hand and live games use shoes that are shuffled long before the end.
Live blackjack and multi-player games
Live blackjack streams a real dealer, usually with seven seats. When the seats are full, many tables let others "bet behind" a seated player. Large-scale formats remove the seat limit: Hollywoodbets' live lobby lists Infinite Blackjack from Evolution, and Bella Casino describes games in which players "participate in the same hand simultaneously against the dealer". Virgin Bet runs its own branded Virgin Bet Blackjack tables.
The studios most often seen in GB live lobbies are Evolution, Pragmatic Play Live and Playtech Live. Table limits are shown on each lobby tile. For a site-by-site comparison see our live dealer casinos page, and for RNG table games in general the casino games hub.
Free blackjack games and practice
Free blackjack is a sensible way to practise strategy, because decisions matter in this game. At a GB-licensed casino, however, demo play requires age verification first, so free blackjack card games online sit behind a verified account. Practising strategy decisions away from any casino, with a chart and a deck of cards, works just as well.
GB rules that apply to online blackjack
- No slot stake cap. The £5 and £2 limits apply only to online slots; blackjack limits are set per table.
- Five seconds per hand. Since 17 January 2025 RNG casino games other than slots must take at least five seconds per game cycle.
- No autoplay or turbo, and a running display of net position and time played.
- Bonuses. Blackjack often counts at a reduced rate, or not at all, towards wagering. Wagering on bonus funds is capped at 10x from 19 January 2026; contribution rules are set in each offer's terms.
Where blackjack is offered
Among licensed operators with verified details, Bella Casino, Pub Casino, LuckyMate, Hollywoodbets and Virgin Bet list live blackjack, and 666 Casino and Amazon Slots list online blackjack among their table games. If you also play the wheel, our online roulette guide follows the same format.
18+ only. Strategy reduces the house edge; it does not remove it. Our responsible gambling page covers limits and free support.

Questions readers ask
What does blackjack pay at UK online casinos?
A natural blackjack usually pays 3 to 2 and other winning hands pay 1 to 1. Some games pay 6 to 5 on blackjack, which costs the player noticeably more; the payout is shown in the game rules.
Does basic strategy work in online blackjack?
Yes, it is the best decision for each hand under the table's rules. It lowers the house edge but does not remove it, and results in any session remain uncertain.
Does card counting work at online blackjack tables?
Not usefully. RNG games shuffle every hand and live games shuffle the shoe well before it runs out.
Is there a maximum stake on online blackjack in Great Britain?
The £5 and £2 stake limits apply only to online slots. Blackjack limits are set by each table and shown in the lobby.
