How to play casino games: guides to slots, tables and odds
Plain-English guides to how casino games and slot machines work, what the numbers mean and which decisions actually matter.

Learning how to play casino games starts with one fact: every game at a licensed casino is random and has a built-in edge for the house, so no method turns the odds in your favour over time. What you can learn is how each game works, what its numbers mean and which decisions actually change anything. The guides in this section explain casino games, slot machines and the terms around them in plain English, using the rules that apply in Great Britain.

How to play casino machines
Online slot machines follow the same basic steps everywhere. Open the game's information panel first: it shows the paytable, the features, the RTP and the stake range. Choose your stake - at GB-licensed casinos the maximum is £5 per spin, or £2 if you are 18-24 - and press spin. Wins are paid for matching symbols on paylines, across "ways", or in clusters, depending on the game. Bonus rounds, free-spin features and jackpots are triggered by special symbols described in the paytable.
Jackpot machines work the same way, with an extra prize pool. Part of each stake feeds the jackpot, which is why the base game often returns less. The jackpot conditions, such as a minimum stake to qualify, are in the game's rules.
What you will not find at a GB casino: autoplay, turbo spins or slam stops, all banned since 31 October 2021. Each spin takes at least 2.5 seconds, and the game shows your session wins, losses and time played.
Can you win on casino slot machines?
You can win on any single spin, and many sessions end ahead. Over a large number of spins, though, a slot returns roughly its RTP, which is always below 100%. That is the honest answer to "how to win at casino machines": there is no timing, pattern or betting system that changes the random outcome. Advice to play at certain times, chase a machine that is "due", or increase stakes after losses is not based on how slots work.
What is within your control:
- Game choice. A higher RTP means less is kept by the game over time. High RTP slots lists games by published RTP.
- Volatility. Low-volatility games give steadier, smaller wins; high-volatility games are streakier.
- Stake size. Smaller stakes make a budget last longer.
- Bonus terms. A bonus with low wagering and no excluded games is worth more than a bigger headline with tight caps.
- When you stop. Deciding a loss limit and a time limit before you start is the single most useful habit.
The full guide, how to win at slots, goes through each of these in detail.
Fruit machines: pub machines and online versions
Pub and arcade fruit machines are land-based gaming machines with their own categories and rules, separate from online slots. Some have "nudge" and "hold" buttons, which can make them feel skill-based. They are not: the machine's payout is set by its design and its random outcomes, so there is no reliable way to beat fruit machines, in a pub or online. Online fruit-machine-style slots copy the look and features but follow the online slot rules described above.
How to play table games
Roulette
You bet on where the ball will land: a single number, a colour, odd or even, a dozen and so on. European roulette has one zero; American roulette adds a double zero, which raises the house edge. See online roulette.
Blackjack
You aim to beat the dealer's hand without going over 21. Here decisions matter: following basic strategy - the mathematically best play for each hand - reduces the house edge, though it never removes it. See online blackjack.
Poker
Casino poker games pit you against the house with a fixed paytable. Peer-to-peer poker pits you against other players, and the operator takes a fee. Online poker strategies such as playing fewer, stronger starting hands and thinking about position only matter in the second kind. See online poker.
Reading the numbers: RTP, house edge and volatility
The four figures below appear in almost every game's information panel. Each has a longer guide listed in the next section.
| Term | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| RTP | Share of stakes a game is designed to return over a very large number of rounds | What you will get back in one session |
| House edge | 100% minus RTP: the share kept by the game over time | A fee taken from every bet |
| Volatility | How unevenly prizes are spread | Whether a game is "hot" or "cold" |
| Maximum win | The largest payout possible on one round | A likely result |

Questions readers ask
Is there a way to win at casino slot machines every time?
No. Each spin is random and a slot returns less than it takes over time. You can choose higher-RTP games and smaller stakes, but no system changes the outcome of a spin.
Do nudge and hold buttons make fruit machines a game of skill?
No. They can feel like control, but the machine's payouts are set by its design and its random outcomes, so they do not give you a reliable edge.
Which casino game has the lowest house edge?
It depends on the rules of each version. Blackjack played with basic strategy and European roulette's even-money bets are usually among the lower-edge options; check each game's rules for its RTP.
Why are there no autoplay buttons on UK slots?
Autoplay, turbo and slam-stop features have been banned on online slots in Great Britain since 31 October 2021, and each spin must take at least 2.5 seconds.
