Gambling deposit limits, reality checks and time-outs

The limit prompt before your first deposit, what changed for deposit limits in September 2026, and the other tools that keep play in check.

Gambling deposit limits cap how much you can pay into an account over a fixed period, and every site licensed in Great Britain must offer them. Since 31 October 2025 operators must prompt new customers to set a financial limit before their first deposit, with setting one as the default. Since 30 September 2026 only gross limits, counting everything you pay in, may be called "deposit limits".

18+ only. This guide covers the tools themselves; the responsible gambling page covers warning signs and free help.

The limit prompt before your first deposit

Under Gambling Commission rules in force from 31 October 2025, every gambling business must:

  • prompt new customers to set a financial limit before their first deposit;
  • make setting a limit the default, so choosing not to set one has to be confirmed;
  • let customers type the amount freely rather than pick only from preset figures;
  • link to limit-setting from the homepage and from deposit pages;
  • remind customers every six months to review their account and transaction information.

So searches for "no deposit limit betting" sites miss how the rules work: you can decline to set a limit, but every licensed site must ask, offer one and keep it easy to find. Your figure is your choice; the prompt is not optional for the operator.

Gross and net limits after 30 September 2026

A gross deposit limit counts every pound you pay in during the period, regardless of withdrawals. A net limit subtracts what you have withdrawn, so winnings taken out can free up room to deposit again. From 30 September 2026, extended from an earlier date of 30 June 2026, GB operators must offer gross deposit limits; only gross limits may be described as "deposit limits"; they must be at least as prominent as other limits; and they run over fixed time frames such as a day, a week or a month.

Some operators offered net limits before the change and many still offer both. Bella Casino and Magical Vegas, for example, list net and gross deposit limits among their tools, and Hollywoodbets' terms describe a 30-day net deposit limit applied from registration alongside gross limits. If you want a firm ceiling on what leaves your bank, the gross limit is the one that does it.

Reality checks and the net position on screen

A reality check is a pop-up that appears at set intervals and shows how long you have been playing, often with your wins and losses for the session. You choose the interval, and some operators offer a wide range; Hollywoodbets lists reality checks from 10 minutes to 6 hours. Since 17 January 2025 all online casino games must also display your net spend and time spent in real time, extending a rule for slots that dates from 31 October 2021. Between the two, it is harder to lose track of a session without noticing.

Time-outs, breaks and self-exclusion

ToolWhat it doesTypical length
Time-out or take a breakLocks one account for a short spellFrom 24 hours to about six weeks, by operator
Operator self-exclusionCloses your account with that operatorMonths to years; 6 months to 5 years at some operators

The first two are set in your account, usually under a safer gambling or responsible gaming section. GAMSTOP is a national scheme run separately; the GAMSTOP guide explains it.

Other limits some operators add

Beyond deposit limits, terms sheets show a range of extra controls. Tombola Arcade lists stake limits and a Time Keeper tool; Pub Casino lists session timers; Wink Slots lists time limits and play reminders; Mecca Games lists game session reminders. None of these replaces a deposit limit, but combined they let you control money and time separately.

Raising, lowering or removing a limit

Each operator's terms say how a change to a limit takes effect. Coral's, for example, say increases need confirmation after 24 hours, so a decision to raise a limit is not made mid-session. Treat that waiting time as part of the protection: if the reason to raise a limit has faded a day later, it was probably not a good reason.

Choosing limits that work for you

  • Start from your budget after bills and savings, not from what a bonus asks you to deposit.
  • Set a gross limit for each period you think in, such as weekly if you are paid weekly.
  • Add a reality check at an interval shorter than your usual session.
  • Set the same limits at every site you use. Each limit applies only to the account where it is set.
  • Review them when the six-monthly reminder arrives.

Affordability is a separate question from limits you set yourself; the affordability checks guide explains what operators may check on their side.

Questions readers ask

Do UK gambling sites have to offer deposit limits?

Yes. GB-licensed operators must offer deposit limits, prompt new customers to set one before the first deposit and, from 30 September 2026, offer gross deposit limits.

What is the difference between a gross and a net deposit limit?

A gross limit counts everything you deposit in the period. A net limit subtracts withdrawals, so it can allow more deposits after you cash out.

Can I play without setting a deposit limit?

Setting a limit is the default and opting out has to be confirmed. Operators must still keep limit-setting easy to find from the homepage and deposit pages.

How quickly can I raise a deposit limit?

It depends on the operator's terms. Some build in a delay for increases; Coral's terms, for example, say increases need confirmation after 24 hours.
