Scratch cards online in 2026: how instant win games work in the UK
Online scratch cards explained: how the result is decided, what RTP and prize odds mean, how they differ from slots and where GB casinos list them.

Scratch cards online are instant win games: you buy a card, reveal the panels with a click or a swipe, and the result, decided by a random number generator the moment you buy, is shown straight away. At GB casinos they sit in sections called "Scratch and Arcade", "Instant Win" or "Instants", and they are run under the same Gambling Commission licence as the casino's slots.
This page explains how online scratchcards decide a win, how to read their prize odds and RTP, how they compare with slots and where licensed casinos list them.

How an online scratchcard decides a win
A paper scratchcard is printed with its result; scratching only reveals it. Online scratch cards work the same way in principle. When you pay, the game's random number generator picks the outcome, then the panels show it. Scratching slowly, revealing panels in a different order or choosing a particular card from a "grid" has no effect on the result. Every card is independent, so a run of losing cards does not make the next one more likely to win.
Most games use one of a few formats: match three symbols, find a winning number, uncover a prize under a symbol, or a multi-game card with several mini-games on one ticket.
Prize odds, RTP and what they mean
Two figures describe a scratch card. The overall odds say how often a card wins anything, often expressed as "1 in X". The RTP says what share of all money spent comes back as prizes over a very large number of cards. A card can win often and still have a modest RTP, because many of those wins return no more than the price of the card. GB rules ban games from celebrating a return equal to or below the stake, so a "win" that only gives your money back should not be dressed up with fanfare.
Both figures, where published, are in the game's help or information screen. Read them before you buy, as they vary widely between games and studios.
Scratch cards compared with slots
| Point | Online scratch card | Online slot |
|---|---|---|
| Result | One reveal per purchase | One spin per stake, often with features |
| Features | Usually none, or a simple bonus panel | Free spins, multipliers, bonus rounds |
| Stake rule | Price set by the game | Maximum £5 per spin, or £2 if aged 18-24 |
| Speed rules | Covered by GB rules for online casino products | At least 2.5 seconds per spin |
The GB stake limits are written for reel-based online slots, so the price of a scratch card is set by the game, and the range is shown on its tile or info screen. The Gambling Commission's design rules from 17 January 2025 cover all online casino products: no autoplay, no turbo features and a real-time display of net spend and time played. Some arcade-style games blur the line, such as Hot Slice, an Evoplay instant game in which you slice falling symbols, with three jackpots and a published RTP of 96.05%.
Where licensed casinos list scratch cards
- Amazon Slots invites players to "try instant-win scratchcards" alongside slots and bingo.
- Bella Casino and Magical Vegas have a Scratch and Arcade section; Magical Vegas notes that these games have no reels or paylines.
- Mecca Games lists instant win and scratchcard games and says the mechanic depends on the game.
- Lottomart has a dedicated Scratch Cards section and an Instants category.
- tombola arcade makes its own instant win games in-house.
Scratch card promotions, where they exist, carry their own terms, often with short expiry windows. For welcome deals in general, our casino welcome bonuses guide explains what to check.
Free scratch cards and real money
Searches for free scratch cards usually mean either demo versions or promotional cards. Demo play at a GB-licensed casino requires age verification first, like any free-to-play casino game. Promotional cards given after a qualifying spend are a bonus, not free, because you have to spend first, and the prizes may carry wagering. Since 19 January 2026 wagering on bonus funds is capped at 10x. Our page on no deposit bonuses covers the genuinely no-deposit offers that exist.
Buying scratch cards online is not the same as buying lottery scratchcards in a shop. Casino scratch cards are casino games, run by the operator's licence and RNG, with prize structures set by the studio.
Paying for online scratch cards
You pay from your casino balance, funded by debit card, e-wallet or another method the operator accepts. Credit cards cannot be used for gambling in Great Britain (since April 2020), and that includes e-wallets funded by a credit card. Our casino payment methods guide compares the options.
18+ only. Instant results make it easy to buy card after card; set a budget before you start. Our responsible gambling page covers deposit limits, time-outs and free support.

Questions readers ask
Are online scratch cards random?
Yes. The result is picked by a certified random number generator when you buy the card. How or in what order you reveal the panels makes no difference.
Can you win real money on online scratch cards?
Yes, real-money cards at licensed casinos pay cash prizes. Over time the game returns less than is spent, as shown by its RTP.
Do the £5 slot stake limits apply to scratch cards?
The limits are written for reel-based online slots. Scratch card prices are set by each game and shown on the game tile or info screen.
Can I play scratch cards for free?
Demo versions at GB-licensed casinos are available only after age verification. Promotional cards usually need a qualifying spend first, so they are a bonus rather than free.
