Black Knight slot: the WMS classic and its expanding knight wild

A 2011 WMS medieval slot, now in the Light & Wonder catalogue, built around a knight wild that expands during free spins.

Black Knight is a medieval slot first released by WMS on 11 November 2011 and now part of the Light & Wonder catalogue. The Black Knight slot plays on five reels and three rows, with a knight wild, a shield scatter that awards 7 or 12 free spins, and a free spins round in which the wild expands on the middle reels. The headline RTP is 96%, though other sources tie lower and higher figures to the size of the stake.

Which Black Knight is this?

Several games share the name. This page covers the original WMS title. Black Knight II is a later sequel, and Mighty Black Knight is a Barcrest game; both have their own maths and features. Published sources also disagree on some basics of the original, including the number of paylines (10 in one UK listing, 30 in others), the top win and the volatility rating. For that reason none of those figures appears here. The paytable in the game at your casino is the reliable source for the version you see.

The knight wild and the shield scatter

The Black Knight himself is the wild symbol. He substitutes for every symbol except the shield, which is the scatter and the key to the bonus. In the base game the wild works as a straightforward substitute, so the interest builds towards the free spins rather than through extra modifiers on every spin.

Free spins: 7, 12, or 12 plus a 500x prize

The number of shields decides the round. Three scatters award 7 free spins and four award 12. Five scatters award 12 free spins and a prize of 500x the bet on top. During the free spins the Black Knight wild expands on the middle reels, covering the reel and taking part in more lines at once.

Black Knight RTP and the stake question

The spec card gives 96%. One UK database lists 94% when playing under £2 a spin, and another lists 97.75% with the Big Bet option. The figures appear to depend on the stake level and the mode chosen, which is why one title can carry several returns. In Great Britain the stake you can choose is limited by law: £5 per spin on online slots for adults, and £2 for players aged 18 to 24. A higher-stake mode may therefore not be available in the GB version, or may run at a different return. Check the help screen in the game for the figure that applies, and see the slot stake limits guide for how the caps work.

RTP is a long-run average and does not describe a single session. The RTP explained page covers what the number can and cannot tell you.

Black Knight demo and where the game is listed

An older WMS title like this one is not always easy to find in free-play form, and this site does not host it. Light & Wonder's website is the first place to check for an official preview. Some licensed casinos also carry a Black Knight demo, but a GB operator has to verify your age and identity before it lets you open any game, free versions included. The paid version starts at £0.10 a spin.

The casinos shown alongside this page list Light & Wonder, or the group under its former name, among their providers. That does not guarantee Black Knight itself is live, so search the lobby by name and check the tile says Black Knight rather than Black Knight II. More titles sit in the online slots section. 18+ only, and the responsible gambling page covers deposit limits, time-outs and help.
