It has five reels, three rows and ten lines, a listed RTP of 96.21% and a top win of 5,000x the stake. Its free spins revolve around one randomly chosen symbol that expands to fill whole reels. How the Book of Dead slot works
The book is the scatter: three or more anywhere award 10 free spins. Before the round starts, one symbol is chosen at random as the special expanding symbol. Whenever enough of it lands during free spins, it expands to cover its reels, which can turn a modest symbol into a large line win. Free spins can retrigger, keeping the same special symbol.
Why the expanding symbol makes it volatile
Everything depends on which symbol is picked and how often it lands. If a high-paying symbol is chosen and lands on several reels, the round can pay heavily; a low card symbol landing rarely may return less than the stake. That spread is why the game is rated high volatility. After a win there is also a gamble feature, which risks the win on a card guess and does not improve the long-run return.
Book of Dead RTP: check the build
The 96.21% figure is the standard build. Because Play'n GO offers operators lower settings, the same game can return less at one casino than at another, and nothing on the reels shows the difference. Open the in-game information before you play. Online slot stakes at GB-licensed casinos are capped at £5 per spin, or £2 for those aged 18 to 24. The features listed for Book of Dead do not include a bonus buy.
Book of Dead free spins offers: what the terms say
Searches for 150, 100 or 50 Book of Dead free spins with no deposit are among the most common for this game, because operators have long used it for welcome spins. Whatever the headline number, the value lies in the terms: spin value, expiry, eligible game, maximum winnings and wagering, which GB rules cap at 10x on bonus funds since 19 January 2026. Spins that require a deposit should not be called free. The no deposit free spins and no wagering free spins pages explain the differences.
Other versions and where to find the game
Related titles include Book of Dead GO Collect, Rich Wilde and the Tome of Dead and a land-based edition; each has its own maths. Several licensed casinos name Play'n GO among their providers, and some list Book of Dead by name; they are shown alongside this review. There is no demo on this site: licensed casinos may offer a demo mode after age verification, which GB rules require before any play. For a similar Egyptian game see the Eye of Horus review.
