Live blackjack: how live dealer tables work at UK casinos

Live blackjack in detail: seats and bet behind, decision timers, the no-hole-card rule, unlimited-seat and speed formats, and the side bets on live tables.

Live blackjack is blackjack dealt by a real croupier on a video stream: you take a seat, place a bet in the countdown, and make your hit, stand, double and split decisions on screen against a timer. At GB-licensed casinos most live blackjack tables use six- or eight-deck shoes, and the rules printed in the help screen - especially how the dealer plays soft 17 and what a blackjack pays - matter far more than the studio or the dealer.

The rules of the game, basic strategy and the main table conditions are on the online blackjack guide. This page covers what is specific to live play: seats and bet behind, timers, the dealing rule most live tables use, the newer formats and the side bets.

Seats, bet behind and the decision timer

A classic live table has seven seats. Each seated player makes their own decisions in turn, with a countdown for each one. If the timer runs out, the table rules decide what happens to your hand - on many tables it stands - so check that rule before you play from a patchy connection.

When the seats are full, most tables let other players bet behind a seated player. Your bet follows that player's decisions: if they double, split or hit, your hand does the same, and you have no say. Some tables let you choose to follow doubles and splits or not. Hollywoodbets' help pages describe this directly: several players can play at a table at once, and "you can even bet behind another player".

The no-hole-card rule on live tables

In many land-based casinos the dealer takes a second, face-down card straight away and checks it for blackjack. Many live blackjack tables instead use the European no-hole-card rule: the dealer receives the second card only after all players have acted. The practical difference comes when the dealer turns out to have blackjack. Depending on the table, you may lose not just your original stake but also any extra stake from a double or split. That makes doubling 11 against a dealer ten or ace less attractive, and the strategy chart for the table should reflect it. The help screen says how the table handles this.

Unlimited-seat, speed and multiplier formats

FormatHow it worksListed by
Infinite BlackjackEveryone receives the same first two cards and the dealer's cards, then each player decides independently; no seat limitHollywoodbets, Virgin Bet
All Bets / All Bet BlackjackUnlimited players share one hand against the dealerBella Casino, LuckyMate
Speed BlackjackPlayers decide at the same time rather than seat by seat, so rounds are shorterVirgin Bet, LuckyMate
Lightning BlackjackAn extra fee on each hand funds random multipliers on later winning handsVirgin Bet
First Person BlackjackA software (RNG) game presented like a live tableVirgin Bet
Branded and VIP tablesOperator-branded or higher-limit tables with the same core rulesVirgin Bet's own Virgin Bet tables

Bella Casino's description of its All Bet game is a useful summary of the unlimited-seat idea: players "participate in the same hand simultaneously against the dealer". The rules on these tables can differ from a classic seven-seat game, for example in the number of decks or extra side bets, so read the help screen of each one. Faster formats also mean more hands per hour, and more money staked per hour at the same bet size.

Side bets on live blackjack tables

Most live tables offer optional side bets next to the main box. They pay large amounts on rare outcomes and carry a much higher house edge than the main hand played with basic strategy.

Side betWhat it pays onWhat to check
Perfect PairsYour first two cards forming a pair: mixed, coloured or perfect (same suit)The paytable for each kind of pair
21+3Your two cards plus the dealer's up-card forming a three-card poker hand such as a flush, straight or three of a kindWhether a flush pays more or less than a straight
Hot 3, Bust It and similarTotals of your first three cards, or the dealer bustingThe published return in the help screen

The help screen of each table states the return of every side bet. As a rule of thumb, a side bet's edge is several times that of the main hand, so treat it as entertainment rather than part of a plan. The 21+3 bet uses three-card poker rankings, explained on our three card poker page.

Practice, free play and live tables

Live blackjack is played for real stakes; there is no free live table at a licensed casino. Practising decisions with a software demo works just as well, and at a GB-licensed casino such demos are available only after age verification. Card counting has little use at live tables: shoes are usually reshuffled well before the end, and unlimited-seat games deal from shoes that are cut early. Basic strategy, matched to the table's rules, is what lowers the house edge.

Limits, bonuses and GB rules at the live table

  • Stake limits. The £5 and £2 caps apply to online slots only. Live blackjack limits are set by each table and shown on the lobby tile.
  • Bonuses. Live blackjack often counts little or nothing towards wagering, and Pub Casino's bonus rules say live casino cannot be played with an active bonus. Wagering on bonus funds is capped at 10x from 19 January 2026.
  • Player protection. Age is verified before you deposit; autoplay is banned; your net position and time played are shown during play.
  • Tax. Gambling winnings are not taxed in the UK.

Among licensed operators with verified details, Bella Casino, Pub Casino, LuckyMate, Hollywoodbets and Virgin Bet describe live blackjack tables; Pub Casino mentions live blackjack "across multiple stake levels", and LuckyMate's live pages run from classic seven-seat tables to Speed Blackjack. The live dealer casinos page compares whole live lobbies, and the blackjack strategy guide has the full chart.

18+ only. A decision timer adds pressure; decide your stake and session length before you take a seat. Our responsible gambling page explains limits, time-outs and free support.

Questions readers ask

How many decks do live blackjack tables use?

Most use six or eight decks dealt from a shoe. Some unlimited-seat formats use a continuous or early-cut shoe. The help screen states the number for each table.

What does bet behind mean in live blackjack?

It lets you bet on a seated player's hand when all seats are full. Your bet follows their decisions and you cannot act on the hand yourself.

What happens if the decision timer runs out?

The table rules decide. On many tables the hand stands automatically. Check the help screen before you play.

Is live blackjack better than RNG blackjack?

Not mathematically: the rules on the felt set the house edge, not the format. Live tables are slower, which means fewer hands and less staked per hour at the same bet size.

Are side bets worth playing at live blackjack?

They pay well on rare results but carry a much higher house edge than the main hand played with basic strategy. The help screen shows each side bet's return.
