Casino cashback bonuses: how cashback offers work

Cashback returns part of your net losses over a period. How it is calculated, cash versus bonus cashback and what the terms usually limit.

Casino cashback returns a percentage of your net losses over a set period, paid either as cash or as bonus funds. Cashback paid as cash can be withdrawn straight away; cashback paid as bonus funds can carry wagering, which GB rules cap at 10x since 19 January 2026. Cashback is less common than spins or deposit matches as a welcome offer, and none of the current welcome offers on this site's operator terms sheets is a cashback deal; the closest alternatives, offers that pay winnings as cash, are listed further down.

How casino cashback is calculated

Most cashback terms work from net losses: the money you staked in the period minus what you won back, on the games the promotion covers. A typical calculation looks like this, using hypothetical figures.

ItemAmount
Stakes on eligible games during the week£120
Winnings on those games£70
Net loss£50
Cashback at 10%£5
Paid asCash or bonus funds, as the terms state

If you finish the period ahead, there is no cashback to pay. Some terms count deposits minus withdrawals instead of stakes minus winnings, which can give a different figure, so check the definition first.

ExpiryNone once paidCommon

A cashback bonus paid in cash is the simpler of the two: a partial refund with no strings once credited. Bonus-funded cashback is closer to a reload bonus that happens to be sized by your losses.

Welcome cashback versus ongoing cashback

Cashback appears in two forms. A welcome cashback offer refunds part of a new customer's net losses over a short first window, such as the first day or week, and then ends. Ongoing cashback runs every day or week for existing customers, sometimes as part of a loyalty scheme. Both are covered by the same GB rules: any wagering on bonus-funded cashback is capped at 10x, and the offer's value must not grow because you reach a spending level faster. A higher cashback rate for higher losses would sit uneasily with the rule that promotions must not encourage spending more than you can afford, so read tiered schemes with that in mind.

The terms that limit a cashback offer

  • Percentage and cap. A rate such as 10% is usually paired with a maximum payment per period.
  • Period. Daily, weekly or a single first-day window for new customers.
  • Eligible games. Many cashback offers count slots only; live casino and table games may be excluded.
  • Bonus play. Stakes made with bonus funds often do not count towards net losses.
  • Payment date and opt-in. When cashback is credited and whether you must opt in first.

Cashback blackjack and table games

Searches for "cashback blackjack" usually mean a cashback promotion that includes blackjack. Because blackjack has a low house edge when played well, operators may leave table games out of cashback or count them at a reduced rate. Where a promotion does include them, the terms name the tables. The online blackjack guide explains the game's rules and limits in Great Britain, including the five-second minimum game cycle for casino games other than slots.

Why cashback is not a safety net

Cashback is sized by losses, which is exactly why it needs care. A 10% return on a loss still leaves 90% of that loss, and treating cashback as insurance can make it easier to keep playing after a bad session. Advertising rules say promotions must not encourage repeated play or spending more than people can afford. Treat cashback as a small rebate on money you had already decided you could lose, not as a reason to play on.

If you notice you are playing to reach a cashback threshold or to win back a loss, that is a signal to stop. A deposit limit set in advance is the most reliable protection.

Questions to answer before opting in

  1. Is cashback paid as cash or as bonus funds, and if bonus funds, what is the wagering?
  2. How are net losses defined: stakes minus winnings, or deposits minus withdrawals?
  3. Which games count, and are live casino and table games included?
  4. What is the maximum payment per period?
  5. When is it credited, and does it expire?

If the terms do not answer all five clearly, the rules on clear and transparent terms suggest the offer is not as simple as its headline.

Offers that pay winnings as cash

None of the current welcome offers on the terms sheets of the licensed operators reviewed here is cashback, but a growing number pay their winnings as cash rather than bonus funds, which shares cashback's main advantage: no wagering on what you receive. Among the highest-scoring, MrQ, Sky Vegas and Virgin Games all pay spin winnings without wagering, and Sky Vegas's offer starts with spins before any deposit.

Questions readers ask

What is casino cashback?

A promotion that returns a percentage of your net losses over a set period, paid as cash or as bonus funds.

Does cashback have wagering requirements?

Cashback paid as cash does not. Cashback paid as bonus funds can, and GB rules cap any wagering on bonus funds at 10x since 19 January 2026.

Is cashback paid if I win?

No. Cashback is based on net losses, so if you finish the period ahead there is nothing to pay.

Is cashback the same as a refund of my deposit?

No. It returns a percentage of net losses, up to a cap, so most of any loss remains a loss. Deposits themselves are not refunded.

Does cashback apply to live casino and blackjack?

Only if the terms say so. Many cashback offers count slots only or reduce the rate for table games.
